Club Members Win Big Film Festival

SFM Members win big film festival

Several members of Sutton Film Makers Club teamed up with another filmmaking group to create the successful short Horror film ‘Lake on the Cabin’ (LOTC), Directed by Jem Karto. Filming took place in winter near Crawley, at a picturesque location with a rustic, lakeside wood cabin and jetty. They embraced the cold and muddy banks to shoot over three days and nights.

The film is a chilling psychological horror that follows a fragile artist’s retreat to a secluded wooden cabin by a mysterious lake. As her artistic inspiration spirals into madness, she must confront her deepest fears and the malevolent presence that lurks within, blurring the line between reality and nightmare.

LOTC Producer Owain Rhys Dain joined the club in 2021 as a way to re learn how to socialise –

”Through the group I met a community of like minded people, full of talent, drive and a genuine willingness to support one another. Since joining I’ve worked on several films in various roles including editing, producing and recording. Lake on the Cabin was created in collaboration with Jem a former colleague, who brought some of his team while I contributed crew and equipment. It was also a passion project for me, shaped by my personal life experiences and everything I’ve learned in the club” – Owain

LOTC Production Assistant and PR Charlie Hall joined in 2023 in search of something creative and horror related

”I joined after a challenging time in life and wanted to get back into creativity. I didn’t know what to expect but really enjoyed a horror lighting workshop and became a member. The club changed my life, I met talented new friends, learned lots of valuable things and utilised my music skills to do film sound. I’ve since been involved in ten films in various roles” – Charlie

The film was officially selected for screening alongside ten other short films at the very last Rob Knox London Film Festival which started in 2009 to honour the legacy of actor Rob Knox, who was murdered in a knife attack shortly after appearing in ‘Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince’ as the character Marcus Belby.

The event was held at Picturehouse Central in Shaftesbury Avenue on Saturday 6TH September 2025 and was hosted by Film Director Aaron Truss, (Pareidolia, (K)nox: The Rob Knox Story). The team Won the ‘Best Cinematography’ Award for their short Horror film ‘Lake on The Cabin’ and were presented with the award by legendary British Horror Illustrator Graham Humphreys.

Big festival win

”To have our work recognised with Best Cinematography at the Rob Knox Film Festival is an honour and the films success is very much thanks to the support of Sutton Filmmakers. I’d especially like to thank Charlie Hall, Tom McDaniel, Zoe White, Rhys Davies Santibanez, Giovanni Tria and Paul Howard, as without their help the project would never have become what it is” – Owain Rhys Dain

‘’We were thrilled that our film was screened at such an important event as The Rob Knox Film Festival and had no idea we were going to receive an award. When Graham called our film name out we were ecstatic. I never would of imagined when joining that two years later I’d be on stage at a major cinema festival, receiving an award with some amazing new friends that I’d made a film with. Big well done and thank you to Owain and everyone involved, Aaron Truss and Sutton Filmmakers” – Charlie Hall
