SUMMARY:Anthology Pitching Night
DESCRIPTION:Directing for the Anthology\n\n\n\n\n\nSession led by Adrian Dean & Rhys Davies \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Anthology Film Project is moving forward\, and we are now entering a crucial new stage – assigning directors to the scripts! This is your chance to take the helm of a short film\, bring a script to life\, and gain hands-on directing experience. \n\n\n\nWe’ve received nearly 30 short scripts\, each under 10 minutes\, and while some already have directors attached\, many are still open for pitching. \n\n\n\n📅 Date: Tuesday\, 1st April 2025🕖 Time: 7:45 PM – 10:00 PM📍 Location: Parochial Rooms\, 42 The Broadway\, Cheam\, Surrey\, SM3 8BL \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to Get Involved as a Director or a Producer\n\n\n\n🔹 Browse the Scripts – All available scripts are now uploaded to the club website on our Anthology Pitching 2025 page. Those scripts that are open for pitching will be on that page. Each script includes a short synopsis and the full script to help you decide which one suits your vision. This page also includes a form for you to complete to let us know that you want script you want to pitch for. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n🔹 Prepare Your Pitch – If you’d like to direct an available script\, prepare a short pitch outlining: \n\n\n\n\nWhy you want to direct or produce this script\n\n\n\nYour creative vision – tone\, style\, inspirations\n\n\n\nProduction ideas – locations\, casting\, crew needs\n\n\n\n\nAgain see our Anthology Pitching 2025 page for full details. \n\n\n\n🔹 Attend Pitch Night – On the night\, each person will have 2-3 minutes to present their pitch. If multiple people pitch for the same script\, the decision will be made based on experience\, vision\, and suitability. \n\n\n\nImportant Notes\n\n\n\n\nIf you wrote a script\, you are welcome to direct it\, but any additional scripts you submitted must be directed by someone else.\n\n\n\nIf you are new to directing\, don’t worry! We can pair you with a mentor to support you throughout the process.\n\n\n\nOnce all scripts have directors\, we will move forward with casting\, scheduling\, and pre-production.\n\n\n\n\nWhy Get Involved?\n\n\n\nThis is a fantastic opportunity to direct a short film\, develop your skills\, and contribute to one of Sutton Filmmakers’ biggest projects yet. Whether you’re an experienced filmmaker or stepping into the director’s chair for the first time\, this is your moment to shape a film from script to screen. \n\n\n\nWe can’t wait to hear your ideas and see your vision come to life! \n\n\n\nGot any questions? Get in touch! Otherwise\, we’ll see you on Pitch Night! 🎬

SUMMARY:George Burt Workshop
DESCRIPTION:A night with an old club member George Burt DOP\n\n\n\nLed by George Burt \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGeorge started his career making short films with us here at SFM and has travelled the world making films ever since.  \n\n\n\nHis portfolio of work covers the spectrum. From shooting documentaries to high end beauty and fashion commercials\, he also shot over thirty feature length\, TV shows and short films. \n\n\n\nThis will be a great evening for anyone wanting to know more about the role of a Director of Photography with plenty of tips\, inside knowledge and some cheeky stories!  \n\n\n\nIn pre production Tom and I discussed how we were going to create a sense of tension through depth and small details within our masters mid shots like a Gregory Crewdson photo. Gregory’s work has a fantastic cinematic feel to it and at the same time something creepy is happening within the image. This is the feeling we want to evoke in the audience. \n\n\n\nFilming took place on the remote Caribbean island of Nevis. As it turned out\, there hadn’t been a single case of COVID for nearly one year on the tropical island. It also was one of the most idyllic spots to shoot a movie with its stunning and vast locations. After 14 days of isolation in a shared house we began location scouting on the film. After being set free\, we were shown the island’s attractions and given a tour of Nevis. We rapidly came to the conclusion that we should avoid everything with a touristy appearance because this wasn’t the world we had first hoped for. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSee George’s Website

SUMMARY:Lenses and Focus Pulling
DESCRIPTION:Lenses and Focus Pulling\n\n\n\nNovember 5 @ 7:45 pm – 10:00 pmLed by Peter Leverick and Tom McDaniel \n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for an in-depth\, practical session exploring the essential techniques of Lenses and Focus Pulling\, led by experienced filmmakers Peter Leverick and Tom McDaniel. This session is a must for anyone involved in filmmaking\, from Directors of Photography (DOPs) and Camera Operators to Directors looking to deepen their technical knowledge. \n\n\n\nThe night will focus on two of the most critical elements in cinematography: lenses and focus pulling. Choosing the right lens can drastically alter the mood\, tone\, and feel of a scene\, making it an invaluable skill for DOPs and Directors who want to tell their story visually. You’ll explore the different types of lenses—from wide-angle to telephoto—and learn how each impacts the image\, depth of field\, and perspective. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFocus pulling\, meanwhile\, is a crucial technique used to maintain sharp focus while the camera or subject moves. This skill is vital for Camera Operators and Focus Pullers\, but also for Directors and DOPs\, who need to understand how focus affects storytelling and the emotional impact of a scene. A well-executed focus pull can guide the audience’s attention\, create tension\, or emphasise key moments in the story. \n\n\n\nLens Care: Protecting Your Most Valuable Tool\n\n\n\nAs part of the Lenses and Focus Pulling session\, we’ll also be covering an often-overlooked but crucial aspect of cinematography: lens care. Our club lens is one of the most valuable pieces of equipment on set\, and proper care is essential to maintaining image quality and extending the lifespan of your gear. \n\n\n\nDuring this segment\, we’ll discuss best practices for keeping your lenses clean and in top condition\, including how to handle them properly\, prevent scratches\, and avoid damage from dust and moisture. You’ll learn about the tools needed for lens maintenance\, such as lens cloths\, air blowers\, and specialised cleaning solutions. \n\n\n\nWe’ll also cover how to store your lenses safely between shoots to prevent wear and tear\, and why regular cleaning is important for ensuring that your images remain sharp and free of unwanted blemishes. \n\n\n\nWhether you’re new to handling lenses or just want to brush up on proper care techniques\, this part of the session will give you practical tips to ensure that your lenses continue to deliver pristine\, high-quality visuals. \n\n\n\nThis practical session will provide hands-on experience\, where participants will get to experiment with different lenses and practice focus pulling techniques. You’ll learn not just the mechanics\, but also the artistry behind making sure your shots are always in focus and visually captivating. \n\n\n\nIf you’re looking to elevate your technical skills and bring a more professional\, cinematic touch to your films\, this session is an unmissable opportunity.

SUMMARY:Writer's Room Workshop - Part 2
DESCRIPTION:Time for you to join a Writer’s Room again!\n\n\n\n\n\nSession led by Adrian Dean \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur last club session was an absolute blast! The energy and enthusiasm in the room were infectious as we all took on the role of screenwriters in our fictional writer’s room. The brainstorming session was particularly dynamic\, with each member pitching in with fantastic ideas that really helped shape our script. It was clear that everyone’s creative input was invaluable\, and the collaborative spirit made the writing process incredibly enjoyable. \n\n\n\nWatching the script come to life with so many different perspectives and imaginative suggestions was truly inspiring. From brainstorming plot twists to developing rich characters\, the session was a reminder of the power of teamwork in the creative process. It’s exciting to see how our combined efforts are forming a script that we can all be proud of. We can’t wait to continue this journey and see where our collective creativity will take us next! \n\n\n\nIf you want to know what we got up to in the session see https://suttonfilm.co.uk/event/writers-room-workshop/ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur creative journey isn’t over yet! After our last successful meeting where we started crafting an exciting new script together\, we’re continuing the adventure at this session. We’ll pick up where we left off\, diving back into our collaborative scriptwriting process to complete our “vomit draft” and further develop our story. Remember\, every one that gives us some input gets to be in the credits. \n\n\n\n\n\nIn this interactive session\, we’ll review the script so far\, brainstorm additional ideas\, and continue writing in real-time. Your input is crucial as we aim to create a script that truly reflects our collective vision. Once finished\, this script will be progressed through the club\, with the ultimate goal of bringing it to life with the help of our talented members. \n\n\n\nSee a little snippet of the night. \n\n\n\nDon’t miss out on the chance to contribute to a project that will be made by and for the club. See you there!

SUMMARY:Writer's Room Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Time for you to join a Writer’s Room for the evening\n\n\n\n\n\nSession led by Adrian Dean \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this meeting\, you will all become screenwriters in our fictional writer’s room. \n\n\n\nWe will conceive\, develop and even write a script together using the power of our collective creative minds. \n\n\n\nI will act as show runner/film studio exec and lead the writers room. Everyone will be able to have some input and therefore be credited as a writer on the script. \n\n\n\nSo come with your ideas and creativity and let’s write a script in real time. We will start with brainstorming the plot. We will develop a logline\, settings and characters. \n\n\n\nAfter that we will start the writing process typing directly into final draft so that everyone can see the screenwriting process in action. \n\n\n\nHere we will create a “Vomit draft” of the script (rushed version) that we can rewrite after. By the end of the session we should have a script to be proud of. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is a Writer’s Room?\n\n\n\nA writer’s room is a collaborative workspace where a team of writers come together to develop and refine content for television shows\, films\, or other scripted media. Typically\, the writer’s room is central to the creation of serialized content such as TV series\, where the team works collectively on plotting\, character development\, dialogue\, and overall story arcs. \n\n\n\nIn a writer’s room\, the process is highly interactive\, with writers brainstorming ideas\, discussing plot points\, and evaluating character development. The environment is designed to foster creativity and collaboration\, allowing writers to build on each other’s ideas and construct a cohesive narrative. This space is often led by a head writer or showrunner who guides the team\, ensuring that the vision for the project is consistent and that the final product aligns with the intended direction. \n\n\n\nWriter’s rooms are not just about writing scripts; they also play a crucial role in problem-solving and troubleshooting narrative issues\, making them integral to the production process. By working together\, the team can address story inconsistencies\, refine dialogue\, and develop compelling characters\, ultimately producing high-quality content that resonates with audiences. \n\n\n\nWhat is a Logline?\n\n\n\nA logline is a concise\, compelling summary of a film’s plot\, designed to capture the essence of the story in a single sentence or two. It serves as a crucial tool for pitching the film to producers\, agents\, and audiences\, providing a snapshot of the central conflict\, main characters\, and key stakes. \n\n\n\nTypically\, a logline includes the following elements: \n\n\n\n\nProtagonist: The main character of the film.\n\n\n\nGoal: What the protagonist is trying to achieve.\n\n\n\nAntagonist or Conflict: The primary obstacle or challenge that stands in the way of the protagonist’s goal.\n\n\n\nUnique Element: Something that makes the story stand out or adds intrigue.\n\n\n\n\nA well-crafted logline should be clear\, engaging\, and succinct\, often conveying the genre and tone of the film while piquing interest. For example: “A down-and-out private detective\, haunted by his past\, must solve a high-profile case involving a missing child while battling his own inner demons.” This logline highlights the protagonist\, the central goal\, the conflict\, and hints at the film’s dramatic elements. \n\n\n\nWhat is a Vomit Draft?\n\n\n\nA “vomit draft” is a term used in screenwriting and other forms of writing to describe a very rough\, initial version of a script or manuscript. The term reflects the idea of getting all your ideas out onto the page without concern for quality\, coherence\, or polish. The primary goal of a vomit draft is to get your thoughts\, storylines\, and characters down quickly\, providing a foundation for further refinement. \n\n\n\nKey characteristics of a vomit draft include: \n\n\n\n\nRaw and Unedited: It is intentionally rough and unpolished\, focusing on getting ideas out rather than perfecting them.\n\n\n\nStream of Consciousness: Writers often write rapidly and without much filtering\, capturing their thoughts and ideas as they come.\n\n\n\nFoundation for Revisions: The vomit draft is not meant for public consumption but serves as a starting point for further revisions\, editing\, and refining.\n\n\n\n\nIn essence\, a vomit draft allows writers to bypass perfectionism and get their creative ideas down\, knowing that they will have ample opportunity to revise and improve the draft in subsequent stages.

SUMMARY:Screen writing practical
DESCRIPTION:Focusing on developing a script for the making a film in a night challenge\n\n\n\nLed by Sara Jordan \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nScreen writing part 1\n\n\n\nAward winning writer/director/actor Sara Jordan will be leading a screen writing evening. The first part of the session will be looking at how to write dialogue .. what are the pitfalls and how to find a characters voice. \n\n\n\nSara has demonstrated many times before how she can help you to reach deep down into your creative mind\, to develop a screen writing idea that you had no idea was there. You will probably surprise yourself. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is a characters voice?\n\n\n\nIn screen writing and storytelling\, a character’s voice refers to the unique way in which they express themselves\, both verbally and non-verbally. It encompasses not only what a character says\, but also how they say it\, their tone of voice\, body language\, gestures\, and overall personality. \n\n\n\nCharacter voice is a crucial element in defining and differentiating characters within a story. It helps to establish their identity\, motivations\, emotions\, and worldview. A character’s voice should be consistent with their traits\, background\, and the context of the story. \n\n\n\nFor example\, a character’s voice may be: \n\n\n\n\nVerbal: This includes the words they use\, their vocabulary\, speech patterns\, accent\, and dialect. A character may speak formally or casually\, use slang or technical jargon\, depending on their background and personality.\n\n\n\nTone and Delivery: The tone of voice reflects the character’s emotional state\, attitude\, and intentions. It can range from confident and assertive to timid or uncertain. The delivery of lines\, including pacing\, volume\, and emphasis\, also contributes to the character’s voice.\n\n\n\nNon-verbal Communication: Body language\, facial expressions\, and gestures convey a character’s emotions\, intentions\, and personality traits. These non-verbal cues complement their verbal communication and provide additional depth to their voice.\n\n\n\n\nOverall\, a character’s voice is a multifaceted aspect of and screen writing story that helps to bring them to life and engage the audience in their journey. It’s a powerful tool for writers\, directors\, and actors to develop rich\, complex characters that resonate with viewers. \n\n\n\nScreen writing part 2\n\n\n\nThe second part will be a challenge in order to come up with an idea for a short film which will be filmed at the next session. There will be 3 genres of film for which ideas will be generated\, the group will decide on the best idea for each genre and then those 3 will be filmed guerrilla style in small teams with only 2 hours minutes to film it. \n\n\n\nThere will be 2 weeks between each session so props and costumes could be sourced if required. \n\n\n\n\nBe a Guerrilla for the evening\n\n\n\nGuerrilla filmmaking\, also known as guerrilla-style filmmaking\, is a method of filmmaking characterised by its low-budget\, independent approach and its focus on speed and efficiency. In essence\, it involves using minimal resources\, often limited equipment\, and a small crew to quickly produce a film under unconventional circumstances. \n\n\n\nIn the context of our club meet where we’re making a film in just two hours\, guerrilla filmmaking can be a highly effective approach. Here’s how members can utilize it: \n\n\n\n\nLimited Resources: Embrace the challenge of working with limited resources. Instead of letting it hinder creativity\, use it to your advantage by thinking outside the box and finding innovative solutions to overcome obstacles.\n\n\n\nSpeed and Efficiency: With limited time available\, prioritize speed and efficiency in every aspect of the filmmaking process. Plan your shots in advance\, make quick decisions on set\, and keep the momentum going to maximize productivity.\n\n\n\nFlexibility: Be prepared to adapt to changing circumstances on the fly. Guerrilla filmmaking often involves shooting in real-world locations with minimal control over the environment. Embrace spontaneity and be ready to adjust your plans as needed to make the most of the available resources.\n\n\n\nSmall Crew: Work closely with a small\, dedicated crew to streamline the filmmaking process. Assign clear roles and responsibilities to each team member to ensure smooth coordination and collaboration throughout the shoot.\n\n\n\nCreative Problem-Solving: Guerrilla filmmaking requires creative problem-solving skills to overcome challenges and limitations. Be resourceful and think creatively to find solutions to any obstacles that may arise during the shoot.\n\n\n\n\nBy embracing the principles of guerrilla filmmaking\, our members can effectively utilise their time and resources to produce a compelling film in just two hours. It’s all about embracing the constraints and finding creative ways to turn them into strengths. \n\n\n\nGuerrilla or Gorilla?\n\n\n\nGuerrilla comes from the Spanish word for a war made up of skirmishes. That guerilla is related to guerra for (you guessed it)\, war. If you remember that guerra is war and guerrilla is little war\, you’ll remember that in English\, independent fighters are guerrillas\, no matter how hairy they are.
